County Tournament – Frome
Last weekends County tournament at Frome saw seven County teams compete against each other.
Dorset & Wilts Girls U18's, exceeded their Coaches' expectations as a new and young squad, managing to win Three games, draw one and only lose two.
The first game saw D&W face Gloucester, we were slow off the mark, which led to Gloucester scoring a try in the 1st minute. We tried our hardest to defend against this strong side, however Gloucester had a fast back line, which led to two more tries being scored, ending the game 15-0 to Gloucester.
Our second game was against Cornwall, and after an injury to one of our own, we had a short break and continued to play on a different pitch. To the credit of the girls they came back strong and scored a try down the right wing. This led us to our 1st win of the tournament, 5-0 to D&W.
After a break of 30 minutes the girls warmed back up, and got ready to play Devon for their third game. Undoubtedly a strong side to be up against, the girls stayed strong in defence and didn't allow any points to be conceded against them. To the amazement of the Coaches and Manager they managed to find the space they needed to attack Devon's defensive line and scored a try, leading us to our 2nd win of the tournament. 5-0 to D&W.
Just as the girls started to find themselves, they had a break for at least an hour.
Their 4th game of the tournament was against Berkshire who are also a strong team and who have been together for a while. It took the girls a while to 'warm up', which led to a converted try by Berkshire in the final two minutes of play. D&W defence was good, but there were a few errors made and penalties given away which led to this loss. 7-0 to Berkshire.
Although they lost the 4th game it didn't phase the girls and they went into their 5th game against Somerset feeling confident. Somerset were strong, however we managed to get the first try in, which gave the girls even more confidence. Even with Somerset scoring against us, the girls persevered, and scored two more tries. 15-5 to D&W.
With a short water break and team talk the girls went into their 6th and final game against Oxon (Oxford).
The girls stayed strong, with a defensive line that although occasionally got broken, managed to stop any tries from being scored. There were some nice lines being run by our backs, but we just couldn't finish it off, and ended our final game with a draw, which the Coaches and Manager and the team were happy with, as Oxon were one of the strongest teams there.
